Social Media Marketing – Part 2




Social media marketing is an easy, effective and inexpensive tool that can be used to market your business. Joining and participating in these social media sites are actually free with your only cost being your personal time. Before you start your social media marketing strategy, it is wise to consider a few things first, such as what you want to accomplish, the amount of time you want to invest and which outlets you will be using.

     The first step to consider before beginning your marketing is to sit down and figure out what your goals will be; exactly what you want to get accomplished through social networking. Do you want to develop and hone some skills, acquire new leads, introduce new products to your customers, get referrals, or maybe a combination of the these. Each person may have a different reason or path in mind that they want to follow.


      Next, you will want to chose which of the outlets you will be using for your social media marketing. There are many different types of social networking sites on the web today. Listed below are just a few.

  • Business networking – Plaxo, LinkedIn
  • Community sites – Facebook, Google +
  • Mini Blog sites – Twitter
  • Social News – Digg
  • Media Sharing – Youtube, Gogle +
  • Bookmarking – Digg
  • Q & A sites – About, LinkedIn


There may be different reasons or skills that you have that will help determine which sites or combination of sites that you will chose to use in your marketing strategy. The more that you use social networking sites, the easier it will become. Practice makes perfect!


      Lastly,  you will need to determine how much time that you will have to invest in social media. Do not shoot too high; you don’t need or want to spend too much time on a site in order to be effective or productive. You will want to pick a realistic amount of your time. For example, if you find that you are extremely busy, then don’t set aside an hour for social media. Most importantly, you will want to implement a schedule for your social networking activity. It may sound a little absurd to do so, but you may find that you may either become so engrossed in your work and lose all track of time while on the site, and find that you haven’t left yourself any time to go on the other sites you wanted to. On the other hand, if you don’t plan it into your schedule you may find that you have absolutely no time at all to spend on social media. Whether you plan half an hour each day or an hour every other day, the key is to be consistent. Writing it into your daily/ weekly schedule will help you to be consistent.

Using social media in your marketing strategy can be very effective as well as fun. If you treat social media marketing as you would any other business strategy, and before you begin, decide what it is you want to accomplish, then chose the vehicle to get you there and create a social media schedule, then you can and will be successful with your marketing. So, give it a try if you haven’t already done so. You may find that some are easier to use than others, some will work well with what your objectives are, or some may get you results quicker than others. Whichever you chose, I believe that you can’t go wrong implementing social media sites into your marketing strategy.
