Can Having Less Stuff Lead to More Happiness?

Graham Hill is a writer and designer and appeared on Ted Talks in February, 2011. He asks the question, “Can having less stuff lead to more happiness?” He believes that by having less things, then we will have more money and leave a smaller global footprint on the earth.

He has come up with 3 rules to having less stuff:

  1. Edit Ruthlessly – Eliminate! eliminate! eliminate! Ask yourself, “Do I really need this?”
  2. Think Small  –  such as a table that seats 4 that can be stretched to seat 10, items that nest into each other such as kitchen items or stacking chairs.
  3. Make Multifunctional – get things that serve more than one purpose such as a hideaway bed that has shelves underneath.

 

A few years ago, I would have thought this practice to be ridiculous. Get rid of my stuff? But I need all this stuff!

Boy was I wrong! I was fortunate to participate in a program called the Ultimate Game of Life. One of the first things I learned was about the The 9 Environments.  My favorite to work on was (& still is) my physical environment. I did an exercise where I eliminated things I no longer used or needed.

And you know what? It was awesome! I had more space, didn’t feel the negative energy from the piles and stacks of papers and magazines in the office, and felt a hundred times better…. no stress. I felt freer, happier, am more productive and have more energy.

Along with my stuff, went stress, negative feelings, feeling of being stuck,  feeling of not wanting to be home, mental clutter, and more.

I never would have thought that getting rid of my things would make me feel so much better. I somehow continue to find more things to get rid of – I haven’t missed any of it! Another bonus is that all this “stuff” I continue to eliminate gets donated to the local charities.

  2. This is a great post! In our house we are doing this right now. It is a big task yet when a few more pieces of “stuff” are gone it feels fantastic. The 3 points are very useful. In fact when i go up north to the cottage where we have no running water, very little furniture and lots of land I have much peace and happiness! Thanks for sharing this Jodene. Best Regards, Wendy

  4. Hi Jodene, we moved our family of 4 from Texas to California last year. The best part of moving was clearing out, throwing away and donating all of the extra stuff we had accumulated over 13 years. Now we have been in our new house about 10 months and already feeling the need to lighten the load again. I love having a cleaner, less cluttered home. Never could have imagined saying that a few years ago! Will have to check out the Ultimate Game of Life and the Ted Talk.

      Wow Minette, that sounds like it must have been a huge job. Moving is the best time to start since you won’t want to pack everything! i found that continual eliminating is a great habit that I have grown to love. Even eliminating junk emails or negative people are added to the list too. I think you’ll love the Ultimate Game. It changed my life and I met some amazing people that are still my friends. 🙂

    Stuff… It always finds it’s way in! lol Like you, I played The Ultimate Game Of Life and went through the ellimination challenge. And I got rid of lots of stuff. And still, I keep finding more to get rid of!! lol I am now much more focused, less distracted, and my mind is clear.
