Sometimes, Business Ownership Can be Just Like a Traffic Jam!

You CreateYour Own Happiness, So What Are you Waiting For?!

I spend a lot of time in my car commuting back and forth. As I was stuck in a traffic jam yesterday, it occurred to me that having your own business/ being an entrepreneur can be just like being in a traffic jam.

Don’t get me wrong, I love being a business owner, but sometimes, I run into a little trouble or a challenge or two. And, I definitely love a challenge, but a lot of the times I come across something in the way, my first reaction is , “oh no.”

But lets get back to sitting in traffic and how it relates to business ownership. There are many elements to roadway traffic that reminds me of different aspects of running a business.

Sometimes, Businesss Ownership Can be Just Like a Traffic Jam!

  • The stop and go – this is where, as the driver, you’re constantly lifting your foot off the brake and then back on the brake, slowly advancing at a snail’s pace. In our business,  we may try different things, take continuous actions but still feel like we’re getting no where. We can see the goal up ahead, see where we’re going, but feel bogged down by how slow progress can be at times.
  • Brake lights going around the bend – There are a couple spots along my usual route where the freeway which is lined with bushes and tall trees makes a turn as it winds south. At this point, all you can see are the brake lights as the lines of cars wrap around the bend. At seeing this, It reminds me of how as an entrepreneur, sometimes we’re not sure what to expect. we never know what life will give us, but the most important thing is to keep on going, keep taking action and progress and success will be yours.
  • Debris in the road – If you’re driving through after a wreck has happened, there may be debris scattered about the road. You may have to continue slowly and navigate around the debris to continue on your journey. I know in my business, I have come across many, many things that I have considered to be a roadblock along the path of my business. I confront these blocks head on, assess what needs to be done, find the solution, implement it and move on. I have learned from the roadblocks and mistakes that I have made along the way.
  • The end of the traffic, where the road opens up – I just love when the traffic breaks up, space between vehicles opens up, and the road is now clear. In my business, this is when that light bulb comes on, and I GET IT. I have been learning so much the past few years, that it feels great when it all comes together when I have reached my goals, correctly implement procedures, or master a new tool. This is also when I can see the results of my actions.

I love having my own business, working online and connecting with people. For me it has been a huge learning process (still learning every day!) and hasn’t been all wins and roses.  I sometimes get frustrated, come across a challenge or problem to which I need to find a solution to, or feel overwhelmed with my constantly growing to-do list.  I enjoy what I do, and even though at times having my own business is like being in a traffic jam, I wouldn’t change a thing and am going to continue on my road to financial freedom!

So true, so true. There are so many bumps in the road to success. Though, the people who are willing to go around the bends and curves are the same that see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Business success, like a traffic jam, is never a straight shot to our desired destination. Sometimes, we must travel outside the chosen map to find our true home. 🙂

You are so right! We need to think out of the box and sometimes come up with some pretty clever solutions. 🙂

Ah yes, Jodene, the delight that is the daily commute (well, mine was daily, anyway). I remember it well! Crawling along at a snail’s pace, and, for me, I took the bus, so as well as stopping in tailbacks and at traffic lights, we also had bus-stops every 20 yards or so. I remember some folk got off at a stop, walked along beside the bus, smoking a cigarette all the way, and got on again when they reached the next stop.
But I digress (always). I like what you did with this. Very stylish, and very sound biz advice for when we get derailed. Great post!

Thanks for sharing your experience Susan. I’m glad you no longer have to commute! I sometimes think of taking the commuter bus. At least then I could have some time to work and get wi-fi. 🙂 But I am glad to have chosen the path that I have. It has been a very rewarding experience. 🙂
